Behavior System - PBIS
On November 12, Rice was recognized by the Arizona PBIS Coalition for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) excellence! PBIS is a framework for reinforcing positive expectations in school like responsibility, respect, and more.
What is Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports?
HOW IS PBIS AT RICE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SCHOOL BEHAVIOR PROGRAMS ?
- The program is focused on acknowledging students for consistent positive behavior. So, instead of focusing on those who are not following the rules, there is a shift to acknowledging those who are making successful choices.
- There are expectations for students, parents and staff, in all school settings.
- Direct instruction of expected behaviors will occur throughout the school year.
- Routines and language with respect to appropriate school behavior are consistent throughout the school.
- Students are rewarded for expected behavior by staff with “Rhino Rewards” that they can spend in the PBIS store at various times throughout the school year.
- Problem behavior will be responded to with consistent consequences that are focused on re-teaching the expected behaviors and setting a plan for future success.
How can Families help?
- Review this pamphlet and especially the RISE values and expectations with your child.
- Discuss ways that these values can also be used at home and in the community.
- Ask your child about their day every evening, specifically how they demonstrated the RISE values.
- Communicate with your child’s teachers.
- Be visible at Rice Elementary – attend PTO meetings and school activities as you are able.
